Building permit

A change in how a building or part of it is occupied, which can trigger review even without major construction.
Chief building official
The official responsible for administration and enforcement of building-permit functions in many jurisdictions.
Development permit
A land-use or planning approval used in several provinces and municipalities; it is not the same as a building permit.
Final inspection
The last required inspection or closure step identified by the authority; terminology and documentation vary.
Heritage approval
Permission or review for work affecting a designated heritage property or district.
Inspection
A site review at a required stage to compare work with applicable requirements and approved documents.
Lot coverage
The portion of a property covered by buildings or structures, as defined by local rules.
Occupancy permit
Authorization or confirmation related to occupying a building or space; not every jurisdiction uses the same terminology.
Permit holder
The person or entity named on the permit and responsible for required notices, inspections or compliance duties.
Plan review
Assessment of drawings and supporting documents before permit issuance.
Setback
Required distance between a building or structure and a lot line, street or other feature.
Stop-work order
An official direction to stop specified work, often related to safety or missing approval.
Trade permit
A separate permit or notification for electrical, plumbing, gas, HVAC or other regulated technical work.
Variance
Permission to depart from a zoning or development standard through the applicable local process.
Zoning bylaw
Local rules governing use, location, height, setbacks, parking and other property-development matters.
